Motorists should plan alternate routes as DOTD work affects key LA 1 corridor

West Baton Rouge Parish drivers face significant traffic disruptions this week as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development continues Phase II of the LA 1 Port Allen Canal Bridge Replacement project.

Full Ramp Closure Thursday Night

The most significant impact comes Thursday night, July 24, when the new LA 1 to I-10 Eastbound exit ramp diversion will close completely from 10 PM to 4 AM. This closure is weather-dependent and could be postponed if conditions are unfavorable.

During this closure, drivers heading eastbound to I-10 from LA 1 will need to find alternate routes. DOTD recommends using Highway 190 as the primary alternative during these hours.

Lane Restrictions Both Nights

In addition to Thursday's ramp closure, motorists should expect alternating left and right lane closures on the current LA 1 northbound bridge configuration both Thursday and Friday nights from 7 PM to 4 AM.

The overnight lane restrictions will create bottlenecks during typically lighter traffic periods, but could still impact evening and early morning commuters.

Construction Details

The closures are necessary to facilitate asphalt pavement repairs and install temporary striping and signage as part of the ongoing bridge replacement project. The work represents a critical phase in the multi-year effort to replace the aging Intracoastal Bridge infrastructure.

DOTD urges all drivers to reduce speed, obey posted signage, and remain alert for construction personnel and equipment operating in the work zone.

Planning Your Route

With the Intracoastal Bridge serving as a vital north-south connection for the parish, these closures will likely push additional traffic onto Highway 190 and local parish roads. Commuters should:

  • Allow extra travel time during affected hours
  • Consider Highway 190 as the primary alternate route
  • Monitor weather conditions, as work could be postponed
  • Stay alert in construction zones
