Port Allen City Council Honors Police Officers, Reviews Development Plans
Port Allen, LA – June 4, 2025
The Port Allen City Council held committee meetings on June 4, 2025, addressing public safety updates, development projects, and upcoming community events.
Police Officers Recognized for Life-Saving Actions
The evening's highlight came as the council honored four police officers with special recognition certificates for their quick thinking that potentially prevented a tragedy. Cpl. Latrese Darden and Ofc. Kajian Clark observed smoke coming from a house on Court Street, with a woman next door who was unaware of the danger.
"You possibly not only prevented the house from burning down but you probably prevented a fatality through your observance," said Council Member Garry Hubble during the presentation.
Sgt. Alaric Celestine and Ofc. Kevin Bergeron also received recognition for their supporting roles in the incident.
Public Safety Report Shows Busy Month
Police Chief Mitch reported 269 calls for service in May, including 241 standard calls and 19 assists to the fire department. The department made 33 arrests across various charges including aggravated battery, domestic abuse, burglary, and drug-related offenses. The department also responded to 19 traffic crashes and issued 42 traffic citations.
When asked about recent shots fired incidents, the chief indicated investigations are ongoing but approaching completion.
Westside Crossing Development Moves Forward
Engineer Jim Tatum presented updated plans for the Westside Crossing Development Project, reporting significant progress with 120 houses already built and 63 more lots coming online. The development has shifted focus to the eastern side of an Exxon pipeline corridor due to permitting challenges.
Key updates include:
- Extension of West View Crossing Parkway for future Louisiana Avenue connection
- Coordination with DOT for Court Street improvements from Highway 415 to Highway 1
- Second phase of privately-owned sewer treatment plant expansion underway
- Completion expected by end of July
The project maintains compliance with city ordinances and requires no waivers or variances.
Juneteenth Celebrations Planned
Community Development announced the city's inaugural Miss Juneteenth scholarship reception on June 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Williams and Lee Community Center, featuring an essay contest chaired by committee chair Mrs. Joseph.
The main celebration runs June 21-22, featuring:
- June 21: Food, entertainment, DJ music, live bands including River Dogs and Rocking Dupy, concluding with fireworks
- June 22: Senior luncheon with entertainment by Dela Band and Tyrene, ending at 6 p.m.
Budget Discussions and Insurance Concerns
The Finance Committee noted a significant change in the city's liability insurance policy. Louisiana Risk Management has implemented a $10,000 deductible for vehicle liability claims starting July 1, affecting all municipalities in their pool due to increased claims across the region.
Sewer Infrastructure Assistance
The council will consider financial assistance for a homeowner on Avenue C facing $7,600 in sewer line costs. The situation mirrors a 2020 case where the city absorbed most costs after a homeowner paid $2,300 toward necessary repairs. The issue stems from decades-old shared connections between properties that required separation due to access restrictions.
Upcoming Events
- June 9: First Mayor's Town Hall meeting, 5:30-6:30 p.m., City Hall third floor
- June 19: City Hall closes at noon for Juneteenth holiday, remains closed June 20
- July 4: City Hall closed Thursday-Friday for Independence Day holiday
Community Recognition
The city acknowledged two centenarians: Miss Pearl Matthews (102) and Miss Thelma Pan (100), with proclamations delivered through the Council on Aging.
The council will continue budget discussions next week as the fiscal year concludes, with final decisions expected on the sewer assistance request and development plan approvals.
