Bottom Line Up Front: Port Allen Middle School was placed on precautionary lockdown Wednesday  morning after a student received an anonymous social media message threatening to "blow up" the school at 2:30 PM Wednesday, prompting a thorough investigation and enhanced security measures.

PORT ALLEN — Port Allen Middle School implemented lockdown procedures Tuesday morning following reports of a threatening message received through social media, according to Captain Kendra Wisham of the Port Allen Police Department.

The Initial Threat

A student received a message through social media from an anonymous account stating "that she would be dead before tomorrow and that they were going to come to the school and blow the school up at 2:30 on tomorrow," according to Captain Wisham.

The threat, which referenced Wednesday's date, prompted immediate action from school administrators and law enforcement to ensure student safety.

Investigation and Safety Measures

Once school officials became aware of the threat, they began questioning students who had received similar messages or had knowledge of the communications. As the investigation expanded, administrators made the decision to place the school on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

"The school started asking different students who happened to be involved with receiving the messages or knowing about the messages," Captain Wisham explained. "It just sent the school on a self-lockdown just to ensure that everything was safe."

Law enforcement conducted comprehensive searches of all student lockers and bags during the lockdown. No suspicious items or evidence were discovered during the search.

Investigation Findings

The investigation revealed the threat originated from an anonymous social media account, making it impossible to identify the sender. What initially appeared to be a credible threat began to unravel as investigators examined the details more closely.

"The social media account that is coming from is an anonymous account, so no one was able to be linked back to that particular account," Captain Wisham said.

The situation became more complicated when a student wrote a note to a teacher about information he claimed to have heard from other students, drawing additional individuals into the investigation.

"Basically, it's a lot of hearsay, and that one account that was from social media that's anonymous," Captain Wisham noted.

School Board Takes Lead

Given the nature of the investigation findings, the school board will handle the administrative review of the incident.

"The school board is going to do their side of the investigation because it started to seem more of hearsay more than anything," Captain Wisham explained. "The school board asks that they do their own investigations as of now, and they'll let us know if we need to be more involved."

Enhanced Security Today and Tomorrow

Despite the investigation's findings, law enforcement implemented enhanced security measures for Wednesday, and Thursday Morning as a precautionary step.

"Just to take some extra precautionary, in the morning, we're going to have extra officers there at the school," Captain Wisham said.

The additional police presence was designed to provide reassurance to students, parents, and staff while maintaining normal school operations.

School Operations Resume

By Wednesday afternoon, normal school operations had resumed following the completion of the initial investigation and safety sweep.

"School is safe," Captain Wisham confirmed, emphasizing that the lockdown was lifted once investigators determined there was no credible threat to student safety.

Context and Response

The incident highlights the challenges schools face in addressing social media threats, which can spread quickly and create widespread concern even when they lack credibility. The swift response by school administrators and law enforcement demonstrates the protocols in place to protect students while thoroughly investigating potential threats.

Anonymous social media threats have become an increasing concern for educational institutions nationwide, requiring careful balance between student safety and avoiding disruption from false alarms.

The West Baton Rouge Parish School District has not yet responded to requests for additional comment about the incident or their threat assessment protocols.
