PORT ALLEN — A Port Allen man has been arrested in Mississippi after a shooting outside the Port Allen Walmart Sunday night that left one person injured and sent a second diving for cover.

Caleb Harris, 29, of Port Allen was taken into custody overnight by the Lamar County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi after fleeing the scene, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. on Feb. 23, deputies responded to the Walmart after a shooting occurred outside the business. One victim was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second person — a female acquaintance — was also fired upon but was not struck.

Detectives determined that the victim and Harris were known to one another and that the incident stemmed from a dispute involving the female acquaintance, according to Sheriff Jeff Bergeron.

Harris fled the scene after the shooting and was later apprehended in Lamar County, Mississippi. He is awaiting extradition back to West Baton Rouge Parish.

Harris will be booked on the following charges:

  • Attempted First Degree Murder (2 counts)
  • Illegal Use of Weapons
  • Aggravated Second Degree Battery

Sheriff Bergeron extended his appreciation to WBR Uniform Patrol, WBR Detectives, and the Lamar County Sheriff's Office for their coordination in quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
