WBR Independent Joins National Newspaper Association

Local news publication gains professional support and legal resources for government accountability coverage
PORT ALLEN, LA – WBR Independent has joined the National Newspaper Association (NNA), the nation's largest community newspaper organization, providing enhanced legal support and professional resources for continued local government accountability reporting.
The membership connects WBR Independent with more than 1,600 community newspapers across America and provides access to NNA's comprehensive support services, including legal assistance, postal consulting, and government relations advocacy.
"Joining NNA demonstrates our commitment to professional journalism standards and ensures we have the resources necessary to continue asking tough questions and holding local government accountable," said Editor John Summers. "Our readers deserve thorough, fact-based reporting on issues that affect their daily lives and tax dollars."
Professional Resources and Legal Support
NNA membership provides WBR Independent with access to a legal hotline staffed by attorneys specializing in media law, public records, and First Amendment issues. The organization also offers postal consulting services, government relations advocacy, and educational resources specifically designed for community newspapers.
"Community newspapers serve as democracy's front line," said NNA Executive Director Lynne Lance. "We're proud to support WBR Independent's mission of providing West Baton Rouge Parish residents with the local accountability journalism their community needs."
Continued Government Accountability
The membership comes as WBR Independent continues its focus on government transparency and public accountability. Recent coverage has examined parish budget policies, infrastructure priorities, and municipal decision-making processes affecting local taxpayers.
"We're committed to covering the stories that matter to West Baton Rouge Parish residents – from city council meetings to parish budget decisions," Summers said. "NNA membership ensures we have professional support and legal resources to continue this important work."
